CAPTURED
Asia's most-wanted terrorist suspect, Hambali, has been
handed to the US authorities and is being questioned at an undisclosed
location following his arrest in Ayutthaya Thailand. His wife has been
turned over to the Malaysian authorities, on arrest warrants they had
for her.
South East Asia leader of Jemaah Islamiyah or JI
for short captured near Bangkok , both
local and American intelligence sources led to his capture. The Royal
Thai Police Department received a check for the major share of the
bounty which was $10 million US.
Highly
Covert U.S.-Thai Operation Nabbed Hambali
The
operation by the CIA and Thai counter-terrorism authorities that
captured top al Qaeda operative Hambali was so secret that few inside
the U.S. government knew of it beforehand.
"It was
highly compartmented. Hardly anybody knew about it. It was exceedingly
carefully planned and carried out, and even within the U.S. government
hardly anyone knew about it," a U.S. official said on condition of
anonymity.
Hambali,
born Riduan Isamuddin, was hunted throughout Southeast Asia as a suspect
in last year's bombings at a Bali nightclub strip and last week's hotel
bombing in Jakarta before his capture earlier this week in Thailand.
The CIA
initially brought his presence to the attention of Thai authorities, and
the Southeast Asian government put that together with tips from local
sources about strangers in Ayutthaya, about 50 miles north of Bangkok.
Thai
authorities carried out the "kick-down-the-door" raid on the apartment
and grabbed the most wanted man in Southeast Asia, along with his wife
and two lieutenants from the al Qaeda-linked militant group Jemaah
Islamiah, U.S. sources said.
"They
deserve great credit for their professionalism and the way in which they
carried out the operation without the loss of life," the U.S. official
said. "Nobody was killed."
The wife of the top Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terror
suspect Hambali has been jailed for two years under
Malaysia's Internal Security Act, the maximum period allowed without trial.
Noralwizah Lee Abdullah was much more than a loyal wife to top
terror suspect Hambali: She was a key player in the Jemaah Islamiah
(JI) militant group, working as one of their
main financial accountants.
Noralwizah revealed who gave orders

Hambali's younger brother arrested
Intelligence Gathering has led to the arrest and
handing over of Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan (27), who is the brother of Hambali,
projected as the operational chief of the Jemmah Islamiyah (JI) of Southeast
Asia. Hambali was arrested in Thailand on August 11 and flown to a secret
destination by the US's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for interrogation.
Regarding the arrest of his brother in Karachi and where he is now. IRS
Agents were instrumental.
On September 20 the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Islamabad announced
the arrest in Karachi of 13 Malaysian, two Indonesian and two Burmese students
on suspicion of links with the JI. It was stated that the arrests were made on a
charge of illegally continuing to stay in Pakistan after the expiry of their
visas. They were studying in the Abu Bakar Islamic University, and two other
madrassas (religious schools) in Karachi.
The FIA in Pakistan was set up after Pakistan became independent for
investigating cases relating to corruption, terrorism, narcotics smuggling and
other inter-province crime. Over the years, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI),
which has been using jihadi terrorist groups for achieving Pakistan's strategic
objectives in India and Afghanistan, removed from the jurisdiction of the FIA
many of its responsibilities relating to counter-terrorism.
After September 11, 2001, the US, distrustful of the ISI, pressured Musharraf to
make the FIA once again the lead agency for counter-terrorism, and a sizable
portion of the US assistance for strengthening Pakistan's counter-terrorism
capability is now going to the FIA, and not to the ISI. The US has also been
trying to have all the military officers in the FIA replaced by police officers
in order to totally "civilianize" the agency once again, as it used to be.
The two arrested Indonesians as Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan (27) originally
from the West Java town of Cianjur, and Muhammad Saifuddin from the Central Java
town of Sleman. The two were arrested at the Abu Bakar Islamic University
in Karachi by police officers, but their current whereabouts were unknown.
Saifuddin was a new student still on probation, not yet a full permanent student
of the university."
The brother of Jemaah Islamiyah's
(JI) alleged master planner Hambali thought he would be a hard to crack, the 13
students arrested with him were being trained as future JI leaders.
Malaysia's Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Heung
said in Kuala Lumpur that the 13 Malaysians, arrested with six Indonesians from
Islamic seminaries in Karachi, were being groomed to lead the al Qaeda-linked
Southeast Asian terror network.
They had already undergone training at a
Malaysian Islamic school formerly run by senior JI figures, and some were
children of JI members in Malaysia, state media quoted the minister as saying.
Pakistan has called the 19 Southeast Asian
students a JI sleeper cell and a potential "second generation of JI terrorists."
"We feel we have been able to nip evil in the bud
by capturing a would-be second generation of JI's group of terrorists," a senior
Islamabad-based security official told AFP Wednesday.
Investigators are questioning the group,
including Hambali's brother Rusman Gunawan, on attack plans and possible
hitlists.
"Rusman Gunawan is hard to break. He's come out
much tougher than his baby-faced appearance," an intelligence official who was
involved in his arrest told us.
"It took two days before he started speaking, but
even then there were a lot of contradictions in his statements."
Material recovered from the students indicated
they were being groomed for future JI operations, the Islamabad security
official said.
"The material was in the shape of computer disks,
CDs and literature," he told AFP.
"The computer disks had recorded lectures
highlighting the virtues of jihad against anti-Islam forces and the duty of all
Muslims to strike terror in the hearts and minds of infidels (non-Muslims)."
"We are now intensively interrogating them on
whether they had targets or a hitlist here or outside Pakistan....what were
their plans and plots and what sort of linkages they have here."
Gunawan, who had denied links to JI, was arrested
from the Abu Bakar University in this port city of 14 million people on
September 1 following a tip-off from US investigators interrogating Hambali.
Gunawan's capture led to the arrests of the other 18 students.
When interrogators focused on one of the
students, 27-year-old Rusman or Gun Gun Gunawan it was hardly a surprise. He's
the brother of Hambali, and within weeks officials revealed that Gun Gun had
confessed to sending his brother $80,000. He's now widely believed to have acted
as a conduit for funds from the Middle East and al-Qaeda to Jemaah Islamiah for
up to two years.
Hambali, who has been in US custody at a secret
location since his capture in Thailand on August 11, is considered al-Qaeda's
point man in Asia and the operations chief of JI, which is blamed for the October
Bali bombings that killed 202 people and a string of other deadly bombings.
Hambali's brother had actually
been arrested a month ago and handed over to the US. He was not among those
arrested on September 20. "Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan was taken into custody
from the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station by the army a month back. About a month
ago, the SHO [station house officer] Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station summoned one
of the Indonesian students, namely Abdul Hadi, whose name was written on his
passport as Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan, for questioning. At the police station, he
was questioned by an army colonel and later was taken towards an undisclosed
location.
Gunawan was known as Abdul Hadi in the institution as his name was very
difficult to pronounce. Hadi possessed all documents. Gunawan came there about
five years ago.
Some 147 students were studying in Jamia Abu Bakar. The students belong to
Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Uganda, Djibouti, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, the
Philippines, Maldives, Australia, Ghana, Somalia, Cambodia, Cameron, Kenya,
Senegal and Afghanistan. Some 270 Pakistanis are also studying in the
institution." We have tracked several of Gunawan's classmates to Thailand but
have but have been hindered in tracking their movements by the Pattaya Trans
National crime suppression division. which coincidentally is headed by a Muslim
Lt. Col.
Another unanswered question is: Did the Pakistani authorities know of the
presence of Hambali's brother in Karachi and his reported activities there since
1999 as the coordinator of the visits of JI recruits from Southeast Asia to
Pakistan and Afghanistan for training? If so, why they did not act against him
until the US made them to?

Khalid
Shaikh Mohammed
(Aliases: Ashraf Refaat Nabith Henin, Khalid
Adbul Wadood, Salem Ali, and Fahd Bin
Adballah Bin Khalid)
is widely reported to have been the military
head of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization, and was
reportedly the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist
attack and other al-Qaeda attacks. On March 1, 2003, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was
arrested in Pakistan.
He was previously reported arrested or killed in Pakistan on September
11, 2002.
He is usually reported to have been born in
Kuwait of Pakistani parents. His date of birth has been variously
reported as
March 1, 1964 or
April 14, 1965.
He attended
Chowan College, a small
Baptist school in
North Carolina, for a few years (beginning in
1983) before transferring to the
North Carolina Agriculture and Technology
University and completing a degree in
engineering in
1986. Subsequently he went to
Afghanistan and joined the fight against the
Soviet Union. (Some sources believe he was fighting in Afghanistan
before he came to the United States.)
In
1996, he was secretly indicted by the Southern District of the state
of
New York for his alleged involvement in a plot based in
Manila to destroy twelve commercial airliners flying Asian-Pacific
routes. In December,
1994, the conspirators had engaged in a test on a Philippines
airliner using only about 10 percent of the explosives that were to be
used in each of the bombs to be planted on United States airliners. The
test resulted in the death of a Japanese national on board a flight from
the Philippines to Japan.
On September 11,
2002, members of Pakistani
Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) variously claimed to have killed
or captured Mohammed during a raid in
Karachi which resulted in the capture of
Ramzi Binalshibh. Some people have reported that Mohammed escaped,
but that his family was captured.
On March 1, 2003, the ISI reported that they had
captured him in a raid in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The raid
was variously reported to be all-Pakistani, in the presence of the
United States
FBI, or a joint raid with the FBI. Following the report of the
capture, some Pakistani officials say he was immediately transferred to
US custody, while others said he remained in Pakistani custody. The raid
took place at the home of Ahmed Abdul Qudoos, who was also reportedly
arrested as an al-Qaida agent.
Many reports have indicated that Mohammed was either
an asset or a member of the ISI during the 1980s or 1990s, and that he
has carried a Pakistani passport since the 1980s.
Mohammed is also widely described as living a lavish
lifestyle, even while he was on the run from the law.
